The Autumn 2026 Trend Report: Five Movements
The Journal's seasonal reading: what serious hands will be wearing between September and the new year — called now, checked in January.
A trend report you cannot grade is astrology. So here is the deal this column makes with you, twice a year: five calls, stated plainly in July, reviewed against reality in January — hits and misses both, in print. This is the autumn slate.
1 · The Sovereign Oval consolidates
Our declaration (see the Report’s lead) graduates from movement to establishment this autumn. Watch for it at the season’s galas: five-plus-carat ovals, low settings, bands of nothing. The tell of the true adopter is what is missing — no halo, no pavé, no second statement on the hand.
2 · Yellow gold returns beneath big stones
Twenty years of platinum orthodoxy are ending, not with a revolution but a warming. Yellow gold under a colourless stone — once the tell of an heirloom awaiting reset — is now the sophisticated contrarian choice, and it photographs with a warmth platinum cannot counterfeit. The vault’s yellow-gold statement pieces have begun moving accordingly.
3 · The tennis bracelet becomes the day diamond
The great rediscovery of the season: diamonds before dinner. The tennis bracelet — especially in yellow gold, especially stacked two deep — has become the acceptable daylight diamond, worn with knitwear and denim by people whose evening jewellery stays in the safe. It is the entry point through which a generation is learning to wear serious stones casually.

4 · Chokers lead the necklace revival
Necklaces are back at the throat, not the sternum. The choker length — collar-adjacent, architectural, borrowed from the portraits of the Belle Époque — is the season’s necklace silhouette, and it favours exactly what the vault holds deepest: graduated lines and rivières that were built for this geometry a century before fashion circled back to it.
5 · The emerald cut takes the dinner table
As the oval owns the public register, its opposite consolidates the private one: step-cut stones — emerald cuts above all — as the connoisseur’s evening choice. Expect the season’s most photographed hands to be brilliant-cut and its most interesting rooms to be step-cut. That division of labour is the real trend of 2026.
