Twice a year, the auction capitals publish the diamond market’s official theatre — and every November, Geneva is the main stage. The catalogues for the autumn season will land in October; here is the reading guide the trade actually uses, ahead of the listings.

Watch the estimates, not the hammers

Headlines report records. Professionals read the ratio of hammer to high estimate across the whole sale — the season’s true temperature. A sale that clears uniformly above estimate says private money is competing in public; scattered records above a soft middle says the opposite.

Watch the withdrawn lots

The most informative stones are the ones that quietly vanish from the catalogue before sale night. Withdrawals mean reserves could not be defended — or that a private buyer paid to skip the theatre entirely. Both are signals the headlines never carry.

Watch the fancy colours

With pink supply ended (see The Pink Paradox) and blues surfacing rarely, every important fancy colour lot is now a census event: the public price of an asset class that mostly trades in silence. November’s colour results will reprice private negotiations through next spring.
