Oval vs Cushion: The Honest Comparison

The two great soft-cornered cuts, judged the way nobody in a showroom will judge them for you — by what each one is actually for.

Oval vs Cushion: The Honest Comparison Legacy Diamonds and Gemstones.
THE LEGACY VAULT · OVAL AND CUSHION, SIDE BY SIDE

Somewhere right now a buyer stands between two rings, an oval on one hand and a cushion on the other, while a well-meaning voice explains that both are beautiful and it is really a matter of taste. This is true and useless. The oval and the cushion are not two flavours of the same dessert; they are two different philosophies wearing similar coats. Here is the comparison a friend in the trade would give you.

What the oval is for

The oval is a public speaker. Its brilliance pattern is engineered to travel — across tables, across rooms, across photographs, which is where the modern ring spends most of its life. Carat for carat it spreads wider on the finger than any classical cut, which is why it owns the corridor of big American stones (see our cover story), and its elongation flatters every hand it meets. Its one confession: the bow-tie, a shadow across the waist that lives in every oval ever cut. In a superb stone it flickers; in a poor one it sulks. Judge the bow-tie in person, in ordinary light, and never from a seller’s video.

What the cushion is for

The cushion is a private conversation. Its fire — the coloured flashes, as against white sparkle — is the richest of any major cut, but it performs best at the intimate distances: candlelight, a hand on a table, the person across from you and no one else. It sits lower and rounder, reads slightly smaller per carat, and in exchange gives a warmth of character the oval simply does not attempt. It is also the great cut of history — the antique stones of the Archive are overwhelmingly cushions and their ancestors — so a cushion carries a lineage on its shoulders.

The oval performs for the room. The cushion performs for the person across the table.

The honest verdict

Choose the oval if the ring’s life will be lived at distance — photographed, seen across rooms, worn as presence. Choose the cushion if its life is close — candlelit, sentimental, historical, felt more than displayed. Budgets being equal, the oval buys visual acreage and the cushion buys character per square millimetre. There is no wrong answer; there is only an honest match between a stone’s temperament and yours. The dishonest answer is pretending they are the same.

See them side by side

The only real way to decide. The atelier stages both cuts against your brief, in person or on a call.
