The Pink Paradox: Rarer Every Year, Wanted More

The great source of pink diamonds closed in 2020. Supply ended; desire did not. The arithmetic of impossible things, explained.

Markets are supposed to clear. Price rises, demand cools, equilibrium returns — the oldest machinery in economics. Pink diamonds broke the machine. In 2020 the Argyle mine in Western Australia, source of the overwhelming majority of the world’s pink diamonds for four decades, closed for good. The textbook said the story would end there: fixed supply, rising price, thinning demand. The opposite happened. Every year since the closure, pinks have become both scarcer and more wanted — the paradox this column takes its name from.

Why scarcity fed desire

The answer is that pink diamonds stopped being a product and became a date. Every pink now carries an implicit label: from before the end. Nothing new is coming — not next season, not next decade, plausibly not ever, because no known deposit replaces what Argyle was. Human beings are collectors of last things; a finite series outsells an open edition in every market we have ever studied, from wine to watches to art. The mine’s closure did not shrink the audience. It informed the audience.

How the trade adapted

Watch how pinks are handled now and you can see the repricing of reverence. Stones that would once have been set as accents are set as protagonists. Fractions of a carat that would once have embarrassed a vitrine are mounted like relics — because they are. And the intense saturations, the vivid and deep grades, have largely stopped trading in public at all; they move between vaults, quietly, the way important paintings do.

What a buyer should actually do

Three honest rules. First, saturation over size: a small stone of convincing colour will outrun a large, pale one over any horizon that matters. Second, papers are absolute — colour origin must be certified natural, no exceptions, no romance. Third, decide your purpose. As adornment, a pink is a permanent joy at any grade you love. As a store of rarity, the bar is higher and the field narrower, and the desk will tell you plainly which side of the line a stone sits on. The paradox rewards the patient — and it has stopped forgiving the casual.
