Why the Papers Matter: Independent Certification, Explained
The certificate is not paperwork. It is the deed, the appraisal and the insurance schedule in one document — here is how to read it.

THE LEGACY VAULT
Every serious stone travels with papers from an independent gemological laboratory, and every serious house will produce them on request. What the trade rarely explains is why the document outranks everything else in the transaction — including the price tag and the romance.
What the laboratory actually does
An independent laboratory has one asset: the fact that it sells nothing. Its graders never meet the buyer, never share in the sale, and grade the stone anonymously against master sets and instruments. The certificate is therefore the only voice in the room with no position — the referee in a game where everyone else, including the house you love, is a player.

How to read one in ninety seconds
Confirm the stone: the certificate number, laser-inscribed on most modern girdles, must match the paper. Read the four grades, then go past them: the plot of inclusions (your stone’s fingerprint — no two alike), the proportions diagram (where brilliance is decided), and fluorescence (a discount or a distinction, depending on the stone). If a seller hurries you past the plot, slow down on purpose.
The certificate is the only voice in the transaction with no position in the game.

The house rule
Our own policy is uniform: every piece in the vault is independently certified, and the papers accompany the piece on request. One price in public, one referee in private — the two disciplines are the same discipline. A stone without papers is not a bargain at any price; it is a story you cannot verify, set in metal.
