Blue Belle of Asia

Sapphire — 392.52 carats, Ceylon — the stone that set the world record for any sapphire at auction

The Blue Belle of Asia is the largest truly famous Ceylon sapphire in private hands: 392.52 carats of cushion-cut cornflower blue, found in the gem gravels of Ratnapura — Sri Lanka’s “city of gems” — in 1926, and holder since 2014 of the world auction record for any sapphire.

Ceylon blue, defined

Sri Lankan sapphires owe their reputation to a particular quality of blue: lighter and more luminous than the inky depths of other origins, with a brightness that survives evening light. The Blue Belle is the type specimen at monumental scale — a stone whose color reads as sky rather than ink, which in sapphires of great size is the rarer and more prized direction.

The coronation that never was

The stone’s mid-century legend held that it was acquired to be presented to Queen Elizabeth II for her coronation year — a gift that history records as intended rather than delivered. The tale attached itself permanently to the stone’s name, a reminder that great gems accumulate stories the way they accumulate owners, and that some of the most durable provenance is aspiration.

Seventeen million dollars of blue

After decades in discreet private ownership, the Blue Belle appeared at auction in Geneva in November 2014, mounted as the pendant of a diamond necklace, and sold for over seventeen million dollars — a record for any sapphire that stands as the benchmark against which every important blue stone is now priced.

What scale does to color

In sapphire, size amplifies whatever the color already is: a fine blue becomes oceanic, a flat blue becomes glass. This is why per-carat prices for sapphires diverge so sharply above twenty carats — and why origin, Ceylon above all, is the first question serious buyers ask.

Legacy’s royal blue sapphire guide explains origin and color grading in depth, and the House’s sapphire pieces appear throughout the collection. Clients may book a private consultation.
